Our university has abundant scientific research capability.It has now founded 2 ministerial key laboratories,the Organ Transplantation and the Respiratory Diseases,and 12 institutes,including Organ Transplantation,Cardiovascular Diseases,Family Planning,Incorporation of Chinese medicine and Western Medicine,Basic Medicine,Environmental Medicine, Social Medicine, Occupational Diseases, Medical Education,Blood Diseases Hepatic Diseases and Medical Information.In addidition, there are 9 medical research centers such as Experimental Medicine and 19 independent research offices.Each year, the number of various research projects at different levels obtained from the nation amounts to more than 200,and the research expenditure comes to 4-5 million yuan. From 1978 to 1994,over 500 research achievements were accredited and approved.Some of them were awarded at different levels. one of which was the National Invention Prizies,124 item-time the Provincial Scientific and Technical Advance Prizes,52 item-time from the municipal goverment of Wuhan, 138 item-time from the Health Bureau of Hubei Province for medical and pharmaceutical advance, and 86 item-time from organizations concerned. From 1985 to 1994, 37 items were applied for patents and 23 of them were granted. also , the university is one of the clinical pharmacology bases designated earlier by the Ministry of Public Health, which undertakes the tasks of clinical drug research for the diseases of cardiovascular system,family planning,respiratiory system, digestive system and skin. Since 1978, great numbers of scientific papers and monographs have been published in the principal academic journals at home and abroad. according to statistics, the total number of them is at the head of the rank among the medical and pharmaceutical institutions of higher learning in the whole country. Now under the sponsorship of the university are 8 professional association at the nation first-class level,nearly 100 such associations at the provincial or municipal levels.
